FOCUS MULAGO CHILD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

 The FOCUS child Support Program is a ministry working towards holistic transformation of vulnerable children, their families and community, enabling them reach their full potential, live sustainable lives and becoming change agents in their areas of influence. This program started 30 years ago in 1992 to enable FOCUS reach out to the community around using the child as the entry point. Over 800 children and their families have benefited from this program since its inception. Our long-term strategy is to replicate this program in all regions where FOCUS operates.

GEOGRAPHICAL SCOPE

The Program is focussing initially on the slums of Katanga, Mulago, Kyebando and Kalerwe areas of Kampala, Uganda – four very poor slum communities. This area is characterised by over drinking, drug abuse, sewage, prostitution, witchcraft and ancestral worship. This area has also been severely affected by HIV and AIDS. The project is strategically located in this area to intervene in the situation of Orphans and other Vulnerable Children (OVC) and their families. This program will in the long run be replicated in other regions where FOCUS operates.

WHY PEOPLE MOVE TO SLUMS

Hundreds of thousands of people live in the slums of Uganda’s capital city, Kampala, most of whom migrated from their rural homes to escape poverty. The slums usually have cheap sharks used for housing. The male residents usually become day labourers, hawkers, domestic workers, and sometimes get involved in other risky ventures, like pick-pocketing and drug-selling. Some of the females are taken as house maids while others become sex workers, working in bars and market vending. The cycle usually continues, in that they produce children who end up going through the same. Our desire is to break this vicious cycle of vulnerability and bring about holistic transformation.
